What is the Quincy Gillmore Civil War Round Table?
The Quincy Gillmore Civil War Round Table was organized in 2011, the first year of the Civil War Sesquicentennial, to study the issues and events of the most important era in American history.
Since our organizational meetings in the Summer of 2011, the round table has grown steadily to a membership of sixty. The monthly meetings feature excellent speakers on Civil War topics from around the state of Ohio and we are also able to draw upon the expertise of our own membership.
Our meetings are held on the campus of Lorain County Community College, which is located in Elyria, Ohio, twenty-five miles west of Cleveland, not far from the original home of Major General Quincy Gillmore in Black River (now the City of Lorain).
The collaboration with LCCC has had benefits for both organizations as the round table is able to use the classrooms while helping with the college's Civil War Sesquicentennial speakers series in the Fall. In addition, the round table has helped other history related organizations and is currently working on new projects in the local area.
Our first speaker for 2014-5 is Ms. Cathy Nelson of the Ohio Humanities Council Speakers Bureau. Ms. Nelson is founder and president emeritus of the Friends of Freedom Society, a nineteenth century historical research organization whose main focus is the Underground Railroad. She will give her presentation "The Underground Railroad in Ohio" to the Quincy Gillmore CWRT on Monday, Septenber 8.
The meetings begin at 6:30 pm on the campus of Lorain County Community College. For further information and directions, contact us at jablko314@gmail.com
Jim, A nice blurb on the Round Table. The coming program should be really great as much happened right here in Lorain County.
